Cardinal Health Specialty Solutions Chief Medical Officer Shares Best Practices for Clinical Pathways Design

Dublin, Ohio, May 8, 2013 — At EyeforPharma’s 4th Annual Oncology Market Access & Marketing Summit, taking place May 8 and 9 in Boston, Cardinal Health Specialty Solutions Chief Medical Officer Bruce Feinberg, D.O., will share expert insight into how to design and implement clinical pathways programs that improve patient outcomes, reduce cancer care spend and improve physician compensation.

Dr. Feinberg will join fellow panelists Kathy Lokay, CEO of D3 Oncology Solutions; C. Lyn Fitzgerald, vice president of US and Global Development for the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) and Dr. Atul Dhir, CEO of New Century Health, for the event’s “C-Suite Pathways Panel.”

This panel will explore how clinical pathways, or evidence-based treatment regimens, can be leveraged to help various players in the healthcare system tackle some of their biggest challenges, ranging from improving the quality of care to reducing healthcare spend to developing new, fairer, and more sustainable reimbursement models for physicians.

Dr. Feinberg will discuss:

  • Common myths and misconceptions about clinical pathways;
  • The critical role that technology and decision support tools can play in expanding successful use of clinical pathways;
  • The importance of building pathways programs that deliver measurable return on investment;
  • Effective strategies for engaging physicians to develop and participate in clinical pathways programs.

“The success of our Clinical Pathways programs prove that when payors and physicians work together, collaboratively – they can drive innovations that benefit all players in the care continuum, including – most importantly –  the patient,” said Bruce Feinberg, vice president and chief medical officer of Cardinal Health Specialty Solutions. “We’re committed to sharing the best practices that have driven our Clinical Pathways success – so we can expand these successes to new geographic areas, additional forms of cancer and new disease states.”

Cardinal Health Specialty Solutions provides clinical, reimbursement and distribution services to help healthcare professionals, payors and pharmaceutical companies deliver quality, cost-effective care to patients with complex diseases. Since launching the industry’s first clinical pathways program for Oncology in 2008, and the first clinical pathways program for Rheumatology in 2011, Cardinal Health Specialty Solutions has partnered with nine health insurance companies to launch Clinical Pathways programs in 12 states and Washington, D.C. Its Clinical Pathways programs have also been proven to help insurers improve patient outcomes and physician engagement while reducing annual aggregate costs related to treating breast, colon and lung cancers.

Cardinal Health Specialty Solutions also provides proprietary technology, tools, educational programs and training to help doctors within payor networks implement and monitor use of clinical pathways. Its medical benefit management system, PathWare™ Decision Transaction Solutions, makes it easier for physicians to participate in clinical pathways programs and provides physicians with real-time decision support at the point of care, including easy access to clinical pathways for various types of cancer. The tool also removes many of the administrative burdens that are associated with treating patients whose treatment plans require specialty medications, which often require physicians to obtain approval prior to prescribing. It also captures clinical results and tracks cost savings of pathways – without additional administrative work.
