Families and Work Institute Honors Organizations with 2012 Work Life Legacy Military Awards

DUBLIN, Ohio, Sept. 20, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Cardinal Health has been named as a Promising Practice of the first-ever Work Life Legacy Military Award. Families and Work Institute (FWI), a nonprofit research organization, created this award in response to the growing workforce challenge and opportunity facing service men and women, their families and employers. The company was formally honored at FWI's annual Work Life Legacy Award dinner at Cipriani 42nd Street in New York City.

With more than 2 million military veterans expected to transition to the civilian workforce by 2016, the need for support and opportunities for this community has become a national issue. According to Admiral Michael Mullen, retired Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and member of FWI's Board of Directors, "Our veterans are returning home to a tough economy, and yet, they are of an extraordinary generation with great potential to continue to make a remarkable difference in the workplace."

Cardinal Health was recognized for its Transition and Mentoring training program targeting recent separations that helps prepare veterans for the civilian workforce; and for leveraging the program's impact by developing a network of nonprofit military service organizations that will funnel qualified candidates into it.

Deborah Mullen, Military Family Advocate and member of FWI's Board, emphasizes that, "The past eleven years of war have seen unprecedented service and sacrifice by our nation's military families. Many have endured long separations fraught with anxiety over the safety of their loved ones serving in harm's way. As these families return to communities across our country, we should recognize their service and sacrifice and make every effort to help them achieve a successful transition."
