LAS VEGAS -- Nov. 28, 2012 -- At the 47th Annual Midyear Clinical Meeting and Exhibition for the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP), taking place from Dec. 2-6 in Las Vegas, several practicing pharmacists and thought leaders from Cardinal Health will lead industry dialogue around some of the hottest topics in hospital pharmacy.
First, on Sunday, Dec. 2, from 9:30-11:30 a.m. at Mandalay Bay, ProCE will sponsor a continuing education seminar entitled Medication Safety: Complexity, Simplicity and Culture. The symposium is funded by a grant from Cardinal Health and will share practical insight into how hospitals can simplify complex processes that can improve medication safety. It will also explore the importance of developing a “just culture” that helps hospitals reduce human and system-based errors while encouraging health care providers to take greater accountability for preventing and reporting errors. On Sunday, Dec. 2, from 1:40-2:40 p.m., Kelly Morrison, BA, director of product management for Cardinal Health’s Pharmacy Solutions business, will lead a continuing education session entitled Positioning Remotely Delivered Pharmacist Care in Small and Rural Settings. This session will help hospitals better understand how to determine when remote pharmacy services can be an effective staffing alternative, and will help participants develop guidelines and checklists to effectively evaluate remote pharmacy service models.
On Monday, Dec. 3, from 2-4 p.m. Pat Uselton, RPh, BS, vice president of professional services for Cardinal Health’s Pharmacy Solutions business, will lead a continuing education session entitled Are You Prepared? Excelling in Joint Commission Surveys. This session will help participants develop strategies for preparing for accreditation surveys. It will provide practical insight into how hospital pharmacists can work with nurses to successfully prepare a strategy for adhering to Medicare’s 30-minute rule for drug administration. More broadly, it will share best practices for complying with hospital-wide accreditation standards, will help participants identify potential problematic areas prior to surveys and will help participants better understand how to develop an action plan that helps them excel in Joint Commission surveys.
