Cardinal Health Launches Web-based Medication Order Management Tool
02/29/2008
Low-Cost Implementation Ideal for Small Hospitals and Alternate Care Sites
DUBLIN, Ohio, Feb. 25, 2008 — Cardinal Health, a global provider of products and services that improve the safety and productivity of health care, today announced a new way for small hospitals to improve medication safety and clinician productivity through a web-based, integrated medication order management and clinical intervention data tracking tool.

The new Rxe-view™ solution uses a hospital’s existing fax machines on nursing units to transmit paper medication orders into a digitized format that is viewable in the hospital pharmacy through a web-based document management system. All orders are then queued in a central location and prioritized by urgency, which enables faster review of patients’ medication orders.

“The Rxe-view™ solution redefines medication order management with a simple, easy-to-use, yet robust solution that can help hospitals improve medication safety at an attractive price point for smaller or alternative care facilities,” said Steve Adams, president of Pharmacy Services for Cardinal Health. “Because of the web-based architecture, the system has a very low cost to implement, which is important in today’s health care environment that focuses on quality improvements that don’t increase the cost of care.”

The Rxe-view™ solution helps hospitals focus on safety, clinical and operational improvements through detailed metrics such as order volume by line, order turnaround times, number of unapproved abbreviations, duplicate orders, medication error rates and more. In addition to these productivity and quality metrics, the system also tracks clinical consultations and hospital interventions according to safety issues and physician practices. The Rxe-view™ solution also has the capability to send medication orders to a centralized, 24-hour pharmacy during off hours without changing the order process on the nursing floor.
