Fast Company: A Mayo Clinic doctor redesigned the surgical gown to make operating less chaotic

Cardinal Health’s new SmartGown™ EDGE is the first pocketed surgical gown designed to help maintain instrument sterility and accessibility. It was created through a collaboration among Cardinal Health, Mayo Clinic, and co-inventors Joseph Dearani, M.D., Director of Pediatric and Adult Congenital Heart Surgery and Salim Walji, M.D., retired Mayo Clinic cardiothoracic surgeon.

“While on the surface, the concept of incorporating pockets into a medical gown seems straightforward, there are actually many complexities involved, particularly when it comes to keeping tools sterile,” the Fast Company article notes.
