Cardinal Health unveils state-of-the art chemistry lab for product research and development

Cardinal Health’s Global Medical Products and Distribution business recently celebrated the grand opening of its new Scientific Services Chemistry Center, a state-of-the-art testing and FDA-regulated laboratory located within its Mansfield, Massachusetts, office. The Chemistry Center includes nearly 26,000 square feet of lab space dedicated to innovation and quality assurance and will provide a comprehensive range of testing services, helping to accelerate new product development, enhance business continuity and manufacturing efficiency, and enable best-in-class regulatory compliance.

By adhering to industry standards, including FDA approval through the Accreditation Scheme for Conformity Assessment (ASCA), Cardinal Health ensures that its products, both self-manufactured and contract manufactured, undergo rigorous safety and efficacy testing before reaching the market. With experienced scientists, the Chemistry Center will handle a comprehensive range of testing services – from routine quality control testing to advanced research and development projects, supporting Cardinal Health’s commitment to safeguarding patient health. The lab will initially focus on chemical characterization which is a crucial part of the biological evaluation process and often the first step in assessing the safety of a medical device. Later capabilities will expand into pharmaceutical stability and product microbiology.

“The opening of the Chemistry Center represents a significant milestone in ensuring the highest standards in safety, efficacy and quality of our products by giving Cardinal Health full control of the testing process,” said Kelley Moffett, Senior Vice President, Quality, Regulatory and Medical Affairs (QRMA). “The new laboratory represents a crucial step forward in our mission to deliver the highest quality medical products to our customers and their patients.”

Advantages of in-house testing
One of the primary advantages of in-house testing is the ability to control testing schedules, leading to improved efficiency and minimized waste. By managing the entire process internally, Cardinal Health can ensure faster turnaround times, both in-house and with customers, allowing products to move swiftly from testing to market with greater flexibility and enhanced quality assurance. With faster and more reliable testing results, Cardinal Health can also take swift action, leading to faster product releases and improved market responsiveness. The cost savings achieved through in-house testing will also enable Cardinal Health to reinvest in further research and development – driving innovation and helping maintain a competitive edge.

Growing Cardinal Health product offerings
The Chemistry Center is part of the establishment of Scientific Services within QRMA, a comprehensive group whose focus is on providing safety, regulatory and quality data anchored in the science of Cardinal Health products and its manufacturing processes. The Scientific Services team will be critical contributors to the integration of products into the market – allowing for oversight of products from the early stages of design and development to customer and patient use. Their mission is to deliver high-quality medical products to customers and facilitate growth for Cardinal Health Brand products.

The Chemistry Center will also support supply chain resiliency through raw material suitability analysis, cost reductions using internal compliance testing, and the ability to implement next generation sterilization techniques. All this will be achieved with the highest levels of quality and integrity intended to positively impact the growth and advancement of the Cardinal Health product portfolio.

“The opening of the Chemistry Center is more than just an expansion of Cardinal Health’s facilities, it is a reaffirmation of our commitment to innovation, quality and customer satisfaction,” said John Iannone, director of Scientific Services. “As part of the vision for Scientific Services, the establishment of this laboratory lays the groundwork for recognition as an industry leader in comprehensive product development, with quality at the forefront.”
