Cardinal Health awarded highest accolades for supply chain resiliency

First healthcare distributor to achieve Resiliency Badge with Diamond-level rating from non-profit consortium Healthcare Industry Resilience Collaborative (HIRC)

Cardinal Health’s U.S. medical products distribution business announced today that it has received the HIRC Resiliency Partner Badge with a Diamond-level rating for high achievements in supply chain resiliency maturity. A healthcare industry benchmark, HIRC’s Resiliency Badge program provides a third-party, evidence-based assessment to evaluate resiliency across multiple domains. The Diamond level – and highest award possible – indicates outperforming scores for Cardinal Health’s medical products distribution business in key areas vital to a resilient supply chain.

“Supply chain disruptions often impact the healthcare industry and subsequently the patients and their providers who need reliable access to critical and life-saving medical products,” said Pete Bennett*, SVP, Global Logistics, Global Products and Supply Chain. “This award and highest level of recognition from HIRC demonstrates the strengths and differentiators across our supply chain, as well as our ability to respond quickly to disruption so our customers can focus on what matters most – delivering safe and quality patient care.”

To be considered for the HIRC Resiliency Badge, Cardinal Health underwent an in-depth, third party-validated assessment of its supply chain resiliency. The business achieved outperforming scores in a variety of categories, earning a HIRC Resiliency Badge at the Diamond level. A total of eight management domains were evaluated using a robust scoring rubric, including:

  • demand planning
  • inventory management
  • logistics
  • supply chain visibility
  • supplier management
  • risk management and contingency planning
  • operational health
  • market conditions

Through its comprehensive, multi-layered approach, the HIRC Resiliency Badge program enables distributors like Cardinal Health to better compete on the merits of supply chain resiliency and helps healthcare providers more readily select suppliers with demonstrated resiliency.

“Resilient supply chains within medical product distribution are the backbone of quality patient care, which is why the depth and rigor of the Resiliency Badge assessment is so critical,” said Jesse Schafer, HIRC Executive Director. “Cardinal Health has exceeded a very high bar established by HIRC’s cohort of 350 domestic healthcare leaders across the provider-supplier spectrum. HIRC is pleased to celebrate Cardinal Health’s achievement of Diamond-level - proof of its commitment to and capabilities in resiliency.”

This is the second HIRC badge awarded to Cardinal Health, a 2023 recipient of the HIRC Transparency Badge, which recognizes transparency as a foundational element to a strong supply chain.
